The USA has been the vanguard of innovative brewing with American pale ales full of citrus, tropical fruit and resinous pine flavours and aromas. Look out for Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Lagunitas IPA and Goose Island IPA.
Belgium is the spiritual home of Trappist beer, where beer is brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery.  Abbey beers are similar, but aren’t brewed by monks, with Leffe being a popular example in the UK. Belgian wheat beers (witbiers) are also amongst the most revered in the world with Blue Moon and Hoegaarden amongst those available in the UK.
Germany’s rich brewing history includes weissbiers (German style wheat beers) offering distinct clove, banana and bubblegum characteristics and the word ‘lagern’ is a German verb meaning ‘to store’.
