The Burton Big Band have been playing since the early 1960’s when it was formed by Les Coates who was a professional musician as well as being the postmaster of Coton in the Elms Post Office at the time. Together with Don Gallimore, Ken Margerrison and Ted Gibbs, Les brought together local musicians and they played at concerts and dances all around Burton and South Derbyshire and often at Burton Town Hall. The band has changed over the years but still plays the same timeless classics of the swing era and has a vast repertoire which includes all the great music such as Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Nelson Riddle and features many of the classic songs of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee to name a few. You can hear the Burton Big Band at the Henhurst Social Club where they have a free concert on the third Wednesday of every month, starting at 8pm, and the next one will be on 21st November. They are also performing a Christmas Concert at St Mary’s Church, Stretton on Saturday 1st December, starting at 7pm. Tickets are £5 each, including refreshments, and are available from Paul Spencer on 01283 561566.
