Claymills Victorian Pumping Station has been described by the Science Museum as the most complete site of its type in the country, with four giant beam engines, of which 3 are now operational, in spite of the site being left derelict for thirty years. 2023 being the 30th Anniversary year of restoration beginning on the site, we intend to make the 4th engine, currently under restoration, steam again for the first time since the site closed.
We have more than 20 small stationary engines, a Victorian workshop and forge, a joiner’s shop, and a Dynamo House with the oldest working steam-powered set in the UK.
To celebrate the anniversary there will be many extra attractions this year, including motor bikes and posy making at Easter, and later in the year an artist's workshop, a one-man circus, live music from a jazz band and a ukulele group, and a 40s weekend!
We'll also be holding a series of 5 anniversary talks on different aspects of Claymills, during the months of June and July.
There's a free car park with disabled parking, and our Stoker's Rest cafe serving light refreshments, fascinating guided tours, and children’s activities.
Please visit our website for steaming days and entry prices.
The site is also open every Thursday and Saturday with guided tours available; admission is free when not in steam, although donations are welcome!
We think Claymills is well worth a visit, so we hope to see you this year.
